(Monastery CANCELLED)

"Upsetter: The Life of Music of Lee Perry" documentary @ TEXAS THEATRE 06/09/11

TONIGHT @ 7:30 PM "Upsetter: The Life of Music of Lee Perry" documentary narrated by Benicio Del Toro.

*** special double feature with "Rockers" (1978) starring Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace w/appearances+performances by Jacob Miller, Kiddus I, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Robbie Shakespeare, Joe Gibbs, Tommy McCook! a must see! ***

I will be DJing Jamaican "chunes" (most likely via laptop for this one-such a busy day at the old job today I think I'll barely make it to the Theatre on time) Before both features, host Erich Scholz will be providing some rare footage from the short-lived BBC Deep Roots TV series from 1983... Some really great stuff!!!

SHOW 19

(*nice flyer too! I believe by Clumsy and Shy)

I hadn't heard of Xander Harris before this show was being booked but his stuff is great. He's coming all the way up to Dallas from Austin, TX and you can hear his tunes here. I was initially supposed to only DJ this show (the promoter requested "DUB") but then there was a couple of cancellations and now it's double duty time! I'm pretty sure I'm opening the show and then playing some DUB (and probably mix in some other tunes...) between bands. $3 is damn cheap! Fellow locals, and all around great dudes Eye's Wings & Many Other Things play 2nd! just go already you dummy!

*for the record show #18 was with ATX bands SOFT HEALER and HATCHET WOUND at the Bryan St. Tavern. Great people all around, probably the one show in a while I thought to myself that a bunch of people really dropped the ball by not attending. SOFT HEALER was amazing. I even thought I played a good set...And also, The Bryan St. Tavern has potential to be the best small room in town so go there and check it out. I feel like I'm telling you what to do a little too much, so goodnight.

OPENING CREDITS

(photo from "Crooks Like Us " by Peter Doyle)

This is just a little loop (from a Dick Hyman track) with a few synth parts played on the qwerty keyboard while sitting at my desk at work... Imaginary film music. this loop will probably be used for something more fully realized in the near future...

SHOW 15

NEW FUMES / LOFI CHORUS / DIAMOND AGE / BEATS MEETS BEATS

This show is going to be like an ol' Denton style house party, except it's in a warehouse space in Deep Ellum. The concept for the show is all acts with two or less members. It's a good thing that there is no restriction on the amount of gear these people can bring...

LOBISOMEM REMIX

A good friend and artistic/musical confidant, Brad Loving - aka LOBISOMEM -also the brains behind birdandwhale.com asked me to do a remix from his Onze Pedras LP and I just finished it! I urge you to check out the original album- I helped Brad flush out some of the arrangements on the LP and I hope to work on some new music with Brad in the near future...

I just dropped this to him, No more edits! It was created using an SP404 in two live takes (after countless failed attempts) and cutting off some its transitional long-windedness. I shaved about 3 minutes off the initial "mix performance"

I prefer the live performance aspect--- I look forward to "playing" this live. There are a few shows I have booked and I'm working on a few more- more on that soon.

It's late, or isit early? I havent left the house for 4 days. (due to ICEPOCALYPSE 2011)

It's snowing right now in Dallas TX.

HELL FROZE OVER!

what now?
I was just told it will get a proper vinyl release in the near future...
so no posting it as originally planned as of yet...

SHOW 12 (LAST SHOW OF THE YEAR...EVER)

This has been a crazy year indeed... Since May, mainly thanks to my good friend Daniel and his excellent "New Fumes" (and persistent prodding) I have played to varying degrees of success... This has usually been in front of fewer than 20 people! I wouldn't have wanted it any other way, except for if a bunch more people showed up- that'd have been cool. I've learned alot about "going solo" and I hope to get a large chunk of recording and rehearsing done to round out the year- I can say that 2011 will definitely be "interesting"...More on this in the near future!

Center Divider is Christian Lee, a former Denton kid who became a man out in the big old world...someone I'm always glad to have crossed paths with over the years. He spent some time running game in London, then moved to (sometimes) sunny Brooklyn and from what I've heard is slowly but surely making it all happen for those lost souls in the big city...He has returned to share some of what he has learned since his departure and he has recruited some great local musicians (i.e. old friends)...

There's a great story about one SXSW many years ago in a hotel room that the Barton girls had, but I'll spare everyone involved because my foggy memory of that night may be completely off the mark... Nonetheless, I'm extremely excited to round out the year playing this show! and I will be at the show in Denton the night before at *Dan's Silverleaf.

I remember seeing Leslie Sisson around when I lived in Austin. She left Texas shortly after I moved there so I didnt really know her that well... I bought a Marantz tape recorder from her at her garage sale the weekend before she left town to hit the big time in Brooklyn some years ago. She will be playing some of her solo material at both shows.

**NEW YEARS RESOLUTION- I will play Dan's in 2011. This is a warning to Jimmy the soundguy, who I will surely be bumming out that night one way or another.

***for those keeping score, which most definitely is just me- the real show #11 was Aaron Teel and Baldomero's Dec 18th house show/party with LYLE DARIN of the December Boys and ROYAL BUTCHERS

(WORK INDUCED) INSOMNIA MIX

GRAB IT HERE>>INSOMNIA MIX

I made this last night while waiting for large scale printouts to print so we could spray-mount them for a giant "science project presentation" gone completely awry. Waiting for printouts-which is akin to watching paint dry... It was a long night, and at around 2:30-3:00AM I decided to turn those lemons into sweet sonic lemonade, and I made this mix. Well, this is rough around the edges at times admittedly a little all over the place, but it has a sense of immediacy that sometimes gets lost when making these lil' mixes...

BIRD AND WHALE MIX - HEAD ALWAYS IN THE CLOUDS

Recorded with Traktor in two separate "live" takes. (Cheap Skills utilized.)

There are a few mistakes here and there but in all, I think it is a pretty solid representation of what I've been checking out lately. I have to admit there are a few tracks from other compilations which has been a self imposed rule to try and stray away from in mixes, but I couldnt help it! This was made in the spirit of the constant search for inspiration and with the intent of sharing some "jams". Some of these tracks I've had for a while now, others are very recent digs. Enjoy!

2004 : THE NIGHT GAME - "Jungle Life" (demo)

I found my demo copy of "Jungle Life" the other day in my desk at work... I was a little surprised to find it every bit as intriguing and fresh as I did when I first heard it years ago.

When I get a chance to actually write something about this album I will add to this post. Most likely if you are looking at this blog you are either me or one of the 5 people I know already who also know what the Night Game is already... so if you don't know where your copy is-
